Men's Health Fair

During the month of June, the City of San Antonio Metropolitan Health District (Metro Health) commemorates National Men’s Health Month and reminds men to take care of their bodies by eating healthy and exercising to prevent chronic diseases, such as diabetes. Having heart disease or other complications in addition to diabetes could worsen the chance of getting seriously ill from COVID-19.

In an effort to decrease negative health impacts in men, Metro Health launched a one of its kind workshop series, The Diabetes Garage. This four-week interactive and educational workshop helps men enhance their awareness and management of diabetes and increase their A1C testing to decrease any negative health effects. The workshop includes a curriculum that uses car maintenance and automotive care analogies to describe how men with diabetes should take care of their bodies. Men who complete the workshop series receive a $20 HEB Gift Card and a red toolbox full of items to care for both their cars and bodies.

Metro Health will also partner with the YMCA to host Hoops and Health, a men’s health fair and basketball tournament, on Saturday, June 17th from 9 a.m. to 2 p.m. at the Walzem YMCA and Equity Hub. This health fair will also feature produce giveaways, a cooking demo, and community vendors.
