Continuous Medicaid coverage, which was put in place as part of the COVID-19 Public Health Emergency, ended in March 2023. As of April 1, U.S. states started disenrolling people who are no longer eligible for Medicaid/CHIP – commonly referred to as “Medicaid Unwinding.” Over the next year, most people on Medicaid/CHIP will receive a renewal packet in the mail or online. In Texas, that’s over 5.6 million people. Those who are no longer eligible or who do not respond to the renewal request will lose their coverage. During this time, an estimated 17.4% of Medicaid and CHIP enrollees are predicted to lose their coverage, and an estimated 7.9% of enrollees will lose their coverage despite still being eligible.
