Asthma Awareness Month

May is National Asthma Awareness Month. When you control your asthma, you can breathe easier, be active, and sleep well. During this month, Metro Health is committed to educate the community about asthma and its triggers while promoting awareness on how this disease can be controlled.

Asthma is a disease that affects your lungs and causes repeated wheezing, breathlessness, chest tightness, and coughing. Those with moderate-to-severe asthma have a risk of being hospitalized from COVID-19. People with underlying medical conditions are encouraged to take the necessary steps to protect themselves and others from COVID-19.

Children want and need to be active and sometimes exercising can be difficult for those with asthma. Metro Health’s SA Kids BREATHE program is a free city program whose primary goal is to improve the quality of lives of children with asthma by teaching them and their family best practices to control this disease. To learn more, the community can visit the SA Kids BREATHE website for more information.

It can be hard to tell if someone has asthma, especially in children under age 5. If you have asthma, consider using the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention’s (CDC) Asthma Action Plan.
